2005-06 marks the second season of the
Music of Invention Concert Series, sponsored by the Black Box of Asbury Park. This year's events will be held at the Shore Institute of Contemporary Art (SICA), 20 Third Avenue, Long Branch. Eight concerts are held on the third Thursday of each month Oct.-May, at 8 p.m. in SICA's intimate cafe, surrounded by contemporary artwork.
As last year, I have selected performers/composers of diverse backgrounds who, whatever their stylistic interests or background might be, tend to represent an elemental approach to music, rather than following the dictates of an established style.
Our seventh final event of the 2005-06 season will feature:
- MAY: Experimental computer-interactive flutist Bruce Gremo performing new work involving two computers and the Japanese Shakuhachi flute.
Performers so far have included:
- OCTOBER: Guitarist Stanley Alexandrowicz and soprano Sungji Kim performing contemporary duets.
Stanley performs solo classical guitar work mostly of the last 20 years. He has discovered and commissioned many composers and performed hundreds of premieres. With the "silvery voiced" opera soprano Sungji Kim, he is exploring the literature for guitar and voice of the last 50 years. Download the complete press release. For more on Stanley, visit his website: http://stanleyalexandrowicz.com
- NOVEMBER: Jazz bassist, composer, member of experimental instrumental band Ui, Wilbo Wright brings an ensemble to perform his own music. Wilbo has played with Yo La Tengo, Chris Harford, Marc Ribot, the Tibetan Bowlers and many others.
- DECEMBER: The Harry Partch Ensemble, microtonal orchestra led by Dean Drummond
- JANUARY: Patti Monson, flute
- FEBRUARY: CANCELLED
- MARCH: Turntablist Marina Rosenfeld, a composer and visual artist based in New York City and featured in the Whitney Biennial and other international festivals and venues.
- APRIL: Music of Invention series producer Carlton Wilkinson with an ensemble performing his own music
All performances are 8 p.m. the third Thursday of the month at the
